I was sad to hear about Al. I moved back to Vegreville 4 years ago and I was fortunate to see Al, whether at a store or on the streets. We always had great chats, I think we believed we solved the problems of the world during these chats! I will always remember how he took the time to come visit our Dad when he was sick at home. Al spent time with Dad, and we know Dad appreciated his visit. Al was a friendly, fun loving and good person. Although he left his children, family and friends too soon, he left a legacy of love and goodness. Al, you will be missed by so many people.

Alan and I became friends when he sat in the table behind me in Grade 9. He was always cracking jokes and making funny comments, which the teacher didn't care for, but he could sure make myself and everyone around us laugh. Through the years we stayed friends and as we got older had some great conversations about life, along with the laughs that never stopped. I haven't lived in Vegreville for quite some time, but Alan would make a point to text me when he was coming through my town and we would meet up for a coffee and chat. He was so easy to talk to and I always enjoyed hearing his many stories. When my Dad was ill and not doing well with his cancer, Alan came over to the house a few times to check in on not only him, but myself, brother and sister. He was a shoulder to lean on during a very tough time. I last saw Alan at our 40th VCHS reunion last summer. He and his reunion team had put together yet another amazing weekend for all of his classmates to enjoy - he worked hard to make sure everyone was having a great time. There really are no words to say how much this special man will be missed - I will treasure the memories I have of Alan always. Michelle (Haubrick) Fisher

Q: How did you meet Alan?
A: We met Alan and his family while fishing at Carpenters lodge in Clearwater Manitoba with friends of ours who are related to Al. We seemed to hit it off right away. It didn’t take long for us to give Al a nickname, everything was big ass, the fish, the boat, etc. so from then on he was Big Ass Al. Over the years we would call each other to see how the farms were doing and shoot the breeze. We’ve visited back and forth a bit (but not enough) and our kids and his keep in touch.
We’ll miss his humour and incredible thirst for trying new adventures

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Alan?
A: I loved his enthusiasm about his children, his work and his farm. His generosity is legendary. He built my very first auction booth and never asked a dollar..just always lending a hand. Sympathies to his family…rest my friend…you’ve earned it.

I was probably Ryanns age, so right around 10-12 years old and we were up visiting and Alan showed up after a slow pitch game wearing his teams jersey, named after him obviously.
“Hoopers Hillbillies”
I loved it, it had a cartoon picture of hillbillies out in front of and old shack.
Each doing various things.
From what I can remember one was playing a wash board, another playing a wash basin base and of course one playing a large moonshine jug.
I remember telling Alan how much I liked the jersey.
Sure enough on our family’s next visit Alan presented me with my very own Hoopers Hillbillies jersey with my name on the back and the number one.
I’ll never forget that. It was such a surprise and meant so much to me.
