Barrie was born on November 6th, 1955 in Holden to Ralph and Emily Gorrie. As a youth Barrie enjoyed playing and listening to music, playing basketball, bike riding and cross country skiing, all of which remained favorite past-times throughout his life. He also enjoyed spending time in his dad's workshop learning how to build and rebuild various things, including woodworking and electronics, that spawned a life-long interest. He graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering in 1980. Around that time, he met and later married Catherine Huculak, which was followed shortly by the birth of their children Melissa and Daryk after which the family moved to Peace River, Alberta. Barrie and his family spent many happy years there and were very active in the local community. After living in many communities across Northern Alberta, including Vegreville, Grande Prairie, Peace River and Lloydminster, the family finally settled in Sherwood Park in 2000. Barrie loved hockey and was a dedicated hockey dad. He was a caring father who spent many hours helping his children with their studies growing up as well as playing sports, games and other fun activities. He also put his love of learning and figuring out how things in practice as he undertook various building projects at home, including extensive landscaping, deck building and completely finishing an unfinished basement.
After 36+ years of working as an engineer, manager and director for ATCO Electric, and many professional accomplishments along the way, Barrie retired in 2020. In his later years, he spent a lot of quality time with his family and enjoyed numerous trips to the mountains, a family vacation to Europe, yardwork, reading (especially history), cooking, watching hockey, and family movie and game nights. He also devoted much of his time and energy to playing with his Grandson Aven building intricate lego structures, reading Marvin the Martian (complete with the voice), and working together with his wife, Cathy, to build an impressive backyard playhouse. He leaves behind many great memories, a loving family, and an indelible imprint on his loved ones. He will be greatly missed and his memory cherished.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
